A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had come in sideways across the market since half past nine, and by eleven you had stopped pretending the stall would sell anything. Your lettering cards sat in a biscuit tin under the tarpaulin: Fresh Eggs, Hot Pies, Mind The Step. The brush was loaded with black enamel, and you were waiting for a customer who wanted more than a price on a bit of board when Mr Dobbs came dripping round the corner of the fishmonger's.

He unfolded a sheet of Basildon Bond from his coat. On it, in his wife's careful biro, were three lines: grace that overcomes all. She had stitched the same words on a sampler above the till at Pemberton's wool shop for thirty-one years, and now the shop was shut and the sampler sat in a box in his hall. He wanted it painted on the front window, he said, but not shouting. He wanted it to look like her.

You told him the big word would need a broad nib and a steady wrist, and the small words would have to run lighter, like someone talking under their breath. You started with the g. The descender was the hard part, the long loop that had to swing down and back without wobbling, so you let the brush go slow and loose while the rain ticked on the tarpaulin like someone counting. At the final stroke you lifted, and the tail trailed off to the right in one thin hair of paint, as though the word had simply kept going.

He looked at it for a long time. Then he paid you in damp coins from a purse that smelled of peppermints, and you watched him carry the card away under his coat, held flat against his chest like something that might still spill. You rinsed the brush, and the rain went on without you.
