God speed helmet and crossed gloves design
Black and grey · Flash
A black and white illustration of a vintage racing helmet with a goggle strap, placed above a pair of crossed gloves over crossed bones. The words GOD, YOU, SPEED and ON YOUR WAY sit in bold lettering around and below the central motif. The linework is bold with a distressed, textured black fill and white highlights, set on a plain white background.

Sit down, son, and mind the oil tin. You'll want to hear this before you wipe another bonnet. That helmet on the nail, the leather one with the goggle strap gone grey? Leave it be. It belonged to Dai Probert, who drove a little green Halstead up Cwm Hill as if the hill owed him money.

He wore those gloves the Sunday he made his best time. Old Tudor Vaughan was starter that day, flag in one fist, and he leaned into the car window and said God speed, the way he said it to everybody, like a man tossing pennies down a well. Dai laughed at him. Said God had nothing to do with it, it was the carburettor and a bit of nerve.
He didn't come back down. The car took the top bend too hot and the wall took the car. I was the first one there, with the rag and the bucket, and nobody ever told me what to do with his kit. So I hung it here, where he used to hang his coat, and told myself I'd sell it come spring.
It's May now, and the grass is up on the hill. Tomorrow you're taking the Halstead out for its test run, and I want those gloves on your hands. Go on. Pull the strap tight. When the flag drops, say it the way Tudor did. Not for luck. Just so somebody on that hill has said it out loud.
