Roller skate with dripping spikes
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette of a roller skate with laces, a stripe across the boot and four wheels, drawn as a flat graphic. Spiky lines rise from the top of the boot and long drips hang from the wheel area and the left side. The design uses only black on a white background, with the white lace and stripe details left as negative space.

The rink on Calder Road had been shut since March, but Dinah still had the key on a bootlace round her neck, and when the council men came with their clipboards she meant to be inside before them. The floor was pale maple, sanded so often the grain had gone soft as butter. Her skates hung from her shoulder by their laces, the black paint on the boots still tacky at the heel where she had worked the brush until two in the morning.

She had painted the spikes first, the long flicks that rose off the boot top like the crest of a startled bird, then let the drips run wherever they wanted. Her gran had skated here in 1978 in white boots bought from a catalogue, and had told her the trick was never to fight the wheels. Dinah pulled the laces tight, stood up on the rubber toes, and felt the old urge in her calves.
The lights were off, so she skated by the grey of the windows and the orange of the streetlamp through the fire door. The wheels rumbled, then sang, then went quiet as she crossed the lines the old skate guard had painted in 1990. At the far end, where the DJ booth used to be, she stopped and looked back. Behind her, four black tracks ran the length of the floor, wobbling where she had leant into the turns and pooling at the corners where the paint had dried thick.
Tomorrow the floor would be sanded and the lines would go. But the new owners would have to walk on it, and somewhere under the varnish her wheel-tracks would rise through the wood like a dark, stubborn grain, and they would know someone had been here last.
