Gold and blue feather design across a back
Back · Colour · Photo
A woman's bare upper back carries a symmetrical fan of stylised feathers in metallic gold and blue, with a central om symbol and a vertical cartouche-style panel containing an eye motif. Smaller black eye designs and a teardrop gem sit below, with a thin gold line running down the spine. The metallic finish and bold fill give the piece a flat, graphic look, and the image is softly lit against a grey-blue background.

The jay came to the bean rows every morning through the wet spring, and every morning it left something behind on the garden wall: a single feather, blue along the outer edge and gold where the light caught it. Maud Pardoe kept them in a biscuit tin under the potting bench until there were eleven. Then she took them out and laid them in a fan on the flagstones, the way her mother had laid out cut flowers for the church.

Her neighbour Hal Renshaw came over the fence to ask what she was doing. "Counting," she said. "The bird has been robbing somebody." He looked at the fan and said the feathers were too bright for any jay he knew. She said nothing. She went indoors and fetched the stone eye she had turned up with the spade in March, a blue glazed thing with a black pupil, which had sat on the windowsill ever since.
She set the eye in the middle of the fan, where a crown would have its centre, and pressed each feather into the soil at its root. Nothing came up but a thin green line that ran between the rows toward the shed. She followed it to see where it ended. It ended at the old well, which had been dry since before the war.
That evening the jay sat on the well's rim and looked at her first with one eye and then with the other. Its tail was bare of gold now, and it had nothing left to bring her. Maud sat on the back step until the light went off the wall, then went in and filled a saucer with seed, because a bird with nothing to give might still be hungry.
