Metallic mandala and lace designs on hand and forearm
Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo
A close-up of a woman's hand and forearm, with a large silver mandala design on the back of the hand and gold lace-like patterns on the wrist and forearm. The designs are temporary metallic tattoos, drawn with fine detailed linework and no shading. The warm skin tones contrast with the turquoise rings and necklaces and the white fabric beneath.

The tin arrived with the Tuesday lodger, a flat box of tissue sheets pressed between card, and Nell Tremayne was told not to open it until the rooms had been aired. She opened it at the kitchen table while the kettle ticked. Inside lay silver mandalas as wide as saucers and gold lace that looked like frost on a window, each sheet backed with paper as soft as a tea towel.

The lodger, Ambrose Quayle, wore three rings, paid late and never stayed past a week. He had left a note tucked under the lid: For the summer ones who think they are too grown for glitter. Nell laughed, then stopped laughing. She cut a silver mandala free with the kitchen scissors, damped the back of her own hand with a sponge, and pressed it down. When she peeled the backing, the design had bloomed into petals, each ringed with tiny dots like beads on a bridle.
By evening the lace had run down to her wrist, and the wind off the bay was rattling the sash windows. She walked down to Porthkennack cove with the tin under her arm. The tide had gone out far enough to leave a ribbon of wet sand shining with bits of old mine tailings, and among them, here and there, a chip of turquoise. She waded to her shins and let the cold water work at the transfers. The silver lifted in pale scales and drifted off on the surface like small coins thrown for luck.
Back at the house she found Ambrose's room empty, the bed stripped, and on the windowsill a single turquoise stone the size of a thumbnail. She wrote a card for the board by the door: Vacancy, one room, sea view, glitter optional.
