Gold and grey mandala temporary tattoo sheet

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

The sheet shows eight separate mandala-style floral motifs arranged in a grid on a white background. The designs use fine dotted and linear detail with radiating petals and concentric rings, with most motifs in metallic gold and a few in grey. The composition is evenly spaced, and the product code VH-235 appears in the bottom corner.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Four in the morning and the ovens have been breathing since two. On the steel bench sit forty lemon sponges for the Wexley wedding, and on each one I am piping a mandala in gold lustre, the sort Nan used to doodle on the back of her shopping lists to keep her hands busy. Dad says nobody looks at the underside of a cake. I told him the bride's aunt looks at everything, and he said that was exactly why he never let me near the good icing until I was nineteen.

The trick is the dots. Each ring needs its own count: twelve for the outer petal, eight for the next, then a single bead in the middle that everyone pretends not to notice. The grey royal icing goes round the rim first so the gold has a frame to sit in. Dad's rule is gold for the orders that matter and grey for practice, so these are the first I have been trusted with on a Saturday. My wrist aches from the ninth cake onwards. By the twentieth I have stopped counting out loud and started counting with my breath.

At the thirty-first, the nozzle catches and one petal comes out fat, a blot where the line should taper. I stand over it with the palette knife, ready to scrape it back to clean sponge, and then the window above the sink goes from black to the colour of weak tea. The dairy van is idling in the lane with its headlights on. I leave the blot where it is. Mrs Okafor, when she collects, will hold the box up to the light and find nothing wrong, and I will know exactly where it is.
