Gold and turquoise metallic hand chain tattoos

Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo

Two hands are shown with temporary metallic tattoos in gold and turquoise. The designs include a fine chain running across the back of one hand to a wrist cuff, a lattice band, turquoise triangles and diamonds, and a diamond motif on the other hand that links to a bracelet. The shapes are flat and precise against a plain pale background, with the two arms crossed in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okonedo's order came in on a Tuesday, pinned to the lid of a biscuit tin, and Ruth read it twice before she showed Dev. Two hands, it said, one chain each, a lattice on the back of the left wrist like the ironwork on the old pit gates. Turquoise where the stone should go, and nothing heavier than paper.

'Paper,' Dev said. 'She wants paper jewellery.'

'She wants it to look like gold without costing her a year's wages.' Ruth tipped the tin, and out slid a drawing of a diamond with one crooked corner, done in biro, the triangles numbered down the margin like a sum.

They spent the afternoon under the skylight cutting foil no wider than a fingernail and laying the chain in a straight line that bent only where knuckles would bend. Dev kept wanting to round things off. Ruth kept drawing them square.

On Friday the order was collected, and the gold caught the grey light off the slate roofs across the street. Ruth pressed each piece down with the back of a spoon, the way her mother had taught her to lift a transfer, and the diamonds lay flat as if they had always been there. When the last one settled, Dev went into the back and came out with the old pit lamp, polished, and held it up beside the lattice. It threw the same shadow as the gates on the hill road.

'Keep the drawing,' he said. 'Somebody will want the next one.'
