Gold and silver metallic temporary tattoos on forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close view of a forearm wearing several metallic temporary tattoos in gold and silver, arranged as bands around the arm. The designs include fish-scale patterns, chevron stripes, a row of dots, a wave motif and fine swirling filigree, with some pieces appearing as thin single lines. The arm rests on a grey knitted sweater, and the warm skin tone and metallic finish stand out against the soft background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bosun's lamp has been swinging since the Azores, and by the third night you have stopped hearing the creak of the hull. What you hear instead is the wash along the rail and Teodora humming off-key in the galley. Your sister's letter sits folded inside your oilskin, its corners gone soft from handling. You have read it so often that the handwriting has become only shapes, a loop here, a long tail there, like the lines of a chart you no longer need.

The bands on your forearm were bought from a stall on the Lisbon quay, from a woman who swore they would last a fortnight in salt water if you kept them dry. Gold and silver, she said, the colour of the sardines the fishermen were gutting behind her. One band has scales like a mermaid's tail, another has chevrons that match the reef points on the mainsail, and a thin silver line runs through the middle of them all. There is a wave pattern too, dotted like rivets, and a swirl of filigree that catches the lamplight every time you lift your hand to the wheel.

On the fourth night the sea comes over the bow in one black heave, and the deck tilts so far that the sisters of the cargo lash groan in their rings. You grab the rail and hold on until the water drains away through the scuppers. When you look down, the silver band has lifted at one edge and curled like a dead leaf. You peel the rest away with your thumbnail, and the gold ones come with it, one scale at a time.

At dawn you stand at the stern and hold the spent transfers over the wake. They are thinner than paper and they flutter like moths before the spray takes them. The gold ones go last, flashing once in the first sun before they sink. You had meant to save them for the day you walked off the gangplank at home. The sea, it turns out, has been keeping its own tally all along.
