Black ornamental neck tattoo
Blackwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a large solid black area of ink on the neck, with ornamental scrollwork and a central diamond motif left as pale skin. The linework is bold and curling, with the negative-space design framing the neck from the jaw down to the collarbone. The image is almost entirely black and cream against a bright white background, with only the lower face and red lips visible at the top of the frame.

Right, sit closer, the stove won't do the work for you. You'll want to hear about Ada Greave and the card she cut, because every keeper's wife on this coast has a version and mine is the true one. Her husband Tobias had the light at Scarrow Point the winter the fog came in thick as wet wool and stayed nine days. The ships could hear the bell buoy but not see the beam, and the beam was too bright, bouncing back off the fog like a shout in a cellar.

So Ada took a sheet of black card from the chandler's, the stiff kind they used for ledgers, and she cut it. She sat up with the good scissors and her sewing lamp and cut scrollwork, acanthus leaves curling out and back on themselves, the same damask they'd pressed into the parlour paper when she was a girl. In the middle she left a diamond, small as a thumbprint. She fixed the card over the lantern glass, and the light came out through the cut places in cream lace and fell on the water in patterns no ship had ever seen.
The skippers said they steered by the lace. Nine days, and not one hull on the rocks. On the tenth morning the mist lifted, and Ada found the diamond piece lying on the gallery floor, blown off in the night, and she never cut another. Tobias framed what was left and hung it in the hall, and the black card is still there, going soft at the edges, with the light still showing through it.
