Two wrists with gold and iridescent foil temporary lettering reading Brides bitches, with a sandy beach and sea behind the hands.

Gold foil wrist lettering on a beach

Lettering · Other · Colour · Photo

Two raised hands with pink painted nails show the inside of each wrist, with the words Brides bitches in brush-style lowercase and capital lettering. The lettering is metallic foil in gold and shimmering iridescent tones, applied as a temporary tattoo. The soft blue sea and pale sand in the background are slightly out of focus, which keeps attention on the wrists.

The sheets arrived on the Tuesday, forty of them, packed in tissue paper that smelled faintly of hairspray. Dot Pellow read the order slip twice before she believed it. Saturday came hot and bright. Lorna's girls walked the prom in matching sundresses, wrists held up as if they were showing off rings, and by noon the words had gone everywhere: on the lifeguard's clipboard, on a spaniel's collar, on the back of a retired postman called Mr Haines who said he'd always wanted to be somebody's bitch. Dot sold out by two o'clock. She didn't mind. The foil lasted a day at most, and she liked the idea of it fading off the wrists while the stories grew.

On Sunday the tide came in over the sand the way it does, and Dot walked down to the sea wall with a bucket to see what it had left. Among the crisp packets and bottle tops she found a single transfer, stuck face down on a flat grey stone, the gold worn to a ghost. Someone had written on the back in biro: Still going. Don't tell Lorna. She turned it over and held it to the sun, and the words flashed twice, then gave up.
