Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Three arms are raised towards the camera, each showing a gold metallic temporary tattoo on the inner wrist that reads TEAM bride in script lettering. The hands have bright pink nails, and one hand wears a thin silver ring. The background is a pale blue sky and sandy beach, and the shot is bright and evenly lit.

The transfers came in a flat paper envelope with instructions that said to press firmly for thirty seconds and never to trust the first sheet. Dot pressed hers for a full minute, then a second minute to be sure, and by the time the coach reached Porthkerris the gold had settled into the crease of her wrist like a shilling in a jar.

Nell had asked for one thing before the wedding: a swim in the cove where her grandmother had taught her to float, with nobody mentioning seating plans. Her cousins had other ideas. They had pooled their money, ordered three sheets of metallic script, and spent the morning arguing about whether TEAM should sit above bride or beside it. Maeve won by standing on the bench at the back of the coach and reading the sheet aloud to the driver, who said it looked very posh and asked whether they were going to be sick.

At the water's edge they raised their arms like people hailing a taxi in the rain, shouting nothing in particular, and waded in to their waists with their wrists held high so the sun would catch the foil. The tide came in faster than the leaflet had promised. When Dot finally looked down, the TEAM had gone soft at the edges, and the bride was a thin gold smear, like the last line of a letter written in lemon juice.

That evening Nell stood in the hotel doorway with her hair still dripping and a sliver of gold on one cousin's thumb. "We look like we've been robbed," she said. Dot held up her wrist, which now read only ride, and declared it the most honest thing the family had ever sent out of a shop. Maeve pressed a fresh sheet to her own arm and said they would do the vows again in the morning, in case the sea wanted a second go.
