Gold metallic temporary tattoo of brush lettering reading Bride's bitches on the inner forearm near the wrist.

Gold foil lettering on the inner wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A hand with pale pink nails is raised against a white background, with the inner wrist and forearm showing a gold foil temporary tattoo. The words Bride's bitches are written in loose, hand-drawn brush lettering, with the apostrophe in the first word and a small heart near the start of the second word. A pink paper flower sits at the top right, and the soft, even lighting keeps the gold shine clear.

The border guard at Calais wanted to know why six women in matching gold were carrying a shoebox of crepe paper flowers across the Channel. Priya had the passports ready. I had the shoebox, which was the real problem, because the flowers had started to bend in the coach heat somewhere past Ashford and I had been holding them on my knees like a tray of eggs.

We had put the transfers on in a service station car park in Dover, each of us holding a wrist out as if we were giving blood. Tess insisted on the brush lettering. Gold foil, she said, not glitter, because glitter got into everything and her mother would never forgive us. The little heart near the second word was Nell's doing. Nobody agreed whether it was a heart or a drop of ink that had gone astray, and by the second hour in the car we had stopped asking.

The guard turned Tess's passport over, then looked at the gold script on her wrist as if it might be a forgery. He read the words aloud slowly. "Bride's bitches." He looked up. "Whose?"

Tess didn't blink. "Mine," she said, "and I've never been prouder of anything."

He stamped the page, handed it back and waved us through. Behind the barrier the paper flowers tipped out of the box one by one onto the tarmac, pink against grey, and nobody stopped to pick them up. Tess laughed all the way to the terminal, and the gold on our wrists caught the sodium light every time someone raised a hand to wave at the bus.
