Gold foil temporary tattoos reading bride and the maids

Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Three wrists are shown from the front, each with a gold metallic script word: bride on the centre wrist, the maids on the right, and a partly cut-off word on the left. The lettering is a thin, flowing script with a foil-like sheen and crisp edges. The hands have bright pink nails and the blurred sandy background gives the composition a light, outdoor feel.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pauline Ashby had run the seaside post office for thirty-one years and she did not trust anything that arrived in a padded envelope with glitter on the label. Still, her niece Bethan had asked for gold, so on the Tuesday before the wedding Pauline sat at the counter with a pair of nail scissors and the order sheet, cutting out the little foil words one at a time.

The bride's word came out clean. The maids came out clean too, though Pauline had to fold that one twice to fit it on the sheet. The third word, meant for the left wrist, had been printed a fraction too close to the edge, so only the first two letters and a curl of tail survived the cutting: ma, and a swoop like a dropped ribbon. She wrote to the company. They wrote back to say the sheet was within tolerance, which Pauline took to mean nobody had looked.

On the Saturday the girls stood on the sand below the chapel railings with their arms held out as if for a bracelet fitting. Bethan pressed the bride word on herself. Her friend Oona took the maids. Then Ruth, who had arrived late and wanted to be included, took the cut word, peeled it off its backing, and laughed when Pauline told her it said nothing at all.

"It says ma," Ruth said. "Ma's a good word. Ma's who you ring when the cake collapses." Pauline looked at the three of them together, the gold catching the low sun, and found she had nothing to add. The tide came in and went out behind them, and the wind lifted one loose strip of foil off the sand and carried it away across the beach, and nobody went after it.
