Gold mandala on upper back
Geometric · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman seen from behind wears a blue halter top and shows a round mandala design on her upper back. The design has concentric rings of petals and dots in a metallic gold or cream tone, with fine, even linework. The bright sunlit background is white and pale blue, with palm fronds at the top, and the gold design stands out against her tanned skin.

The gold will not wait for you, so you learn to work while it is still soft. Ptolemaios taught you that in the three years since your father walked you down the hill to the workshops in Rhakotis, and this morning you are beating a sheet of Nubian gold so thin it shows the lamp through it. Your hands are steady. Your master's are not. He watches from the bench with his cup of watered wine and pretends he is not counting your hammer strokes.

The commission belongs to a widow called Irene, who wants a rosette for the lid of her daughter's dowry box. She has drawn it for you in charcoal on a broken tile: a ring of petals, then a ring of dots, then another ring of petals, folding inward to a seed-point at the centre like a fig flower opening. Every dot must be punched from behind with a bronze pin, and the punch leaves a small raised bruise on the front. Ptolemaios says that the back is for the gods and the front is for the people who pay. You do not think the gods care much for the back either, but you keep your opinion to yourself and work until the lamp oil runs low.
At dusk you set the final ring, and you see what the reversed dots have done. Every mark on the face of the disc sits in its own small hollow, and the hollows hold the light the way a cupped palm holds rainwater. You turn it over and find your own handwriting, backwards, in a hundred tiny craters.
Irene comes at dawn with her daughter's bridal veil folded over one arm. She lifts the rosette to the harbour light, and the gold throws a scatter of small suns across the whitewashed wall. She does not look at the back. You do not tell her to.
