Gold metallic temporary tattoo of stacked geometric arrows on a woman's upper back, with a matching gold armband on her upper arm.

Gold arrow design on a woman's back

Geometric · Back · Colour · Photo

A woman seen from behind, with long hair and a white halter neck top, shows a vertical arrangement of gold geometric arrows on her upper back. A small line of script sits near her left shoulder blade, and a gold patterned band wraps her upper arm. The metallic ink is flat and solid, set against warm sunlit skin and a blurred outdoor background with a wooden overhang and railing.

Dad always said you could tell a good fletcher by the sound a shaft made when you laid it on the bench, a dry tick like a clock someone had forgotten to wind. I'd been trimming goose feathers into vanes since the spring, working with a razor and a steady hand, and by August my fingers smelled of glue and sawdust no matter how often I scrubbed them.

The commission came from Mrs Hallam at the Bell, who wanted twelve arrows for her niece's wedding. Not for shooting, she said, for the table. The niece had grown up on the butts behind the church, and the family wanted something to lay beside the cake. I cut the nocks from ash, stacked the shafts in threes so the points formed little rows of triangles, and dipped each tip in gold leaf so thin it lifted if you breathed on it.

On the morning of the wedding the sun came through the chapel windows at a slant, and the gold caught the light so the arrows seemed to burn on the trestle. Mrs Hallam came round the back of the hall with her hands full of paper bags and asked what I wanted for them. I said the feathers had cost me nothing. She pressed a single florin into my palm and said that was the price of a good fletcher, which Dad would have laughed at. I kept it in my apron pocket all afternoon, where it wore a warm dent against my hip.
