Bare branch tree on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A delicate tree with bare, branching limbs is drawn in thin black linework up the forearm. The lines are mostly unshaded, with lighter grey tones in places. Warm sunlight and a rainbow lens flare fall across the skin, and a red string bracelet with a small silver clasp sits near the wrist.

The snow came sideways over Hollin Pass the afternoon the mule gave out, and you were the one who had to decide whether to keep walking. Marta, the postmaster's girl, had pressed a spool of red wool into your hand at the bottom of the valley and said, half joking, to tie a knot on the first tree that still looked like a tree in the wind. You had laughed then. Now every trunk on the slope looked like a hand held up against the sky.

Except the one beside the cairn. It was a thin ash, bare as wire, its limbs splitting and splitting again until the twigs were finer than hair against the grey. Nothing green had grown on it in years, or the wind had taken it all. You stood under it with numb fingers and fought the knot, and the wool kept slipping, and you thought about the mule, and about the letter inside your coat that had to reach the valley farm before the thaw.

The knot held on the third try. You pulled it tight around a branch that bent but did not break, and the wind dropped for a breath. In the quiet you heard bells far below, the village flock coming home along the road. You could not have said which way the bells were, only that they were there, and that you were going to be able to find them.

When the thaw came in April, Marta climbed up with you to check. The ash had a dozen red threads on it now, one from every traveller who had sheltered in the hut, and new buds were pushing out between them. She tugged your sleeve and pointed. Your own thread was still there, faded to the colour of rust, and the tree had grown up around it.
