Metallic feather and leaf designs on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A woman's upper arm is shown in close crop, with a band of silver leaf or feather shapes running across the skin. A separate silver and gold feather design sits lower in the frame on a plain white background, and gold and silver bracelets are visible at the wrist. The metallic finish catches the light and the photo is warm toned with soft daylight from a window.

Dear Tom,

The hedge along the lower field has turned the colour of old brass, and I meant to tell you the feathers you sent at Michaelmas arrived in one piece, which is more than the postman can say for the parcel. Mum wore the silver leaf band to the Harvest supper and the Pearce girls asked where she got it. She said from a man in Exeter who sells things to people who don't own anything. She was pleased with that.
The frost came early, hard enough to crack the water trough on Tuesday. Dad would have walked straight out and broken the ice with the heel of his boot, but I went with the kettle instead. The rooks sat in the ash like a row of burnt paper, and I stood there thinking that if you had come home at Christmas as you promised, we could have hung the gate together.
Last week I found one of your gold leaves in the pocket of the old wax jacket, flattened and warm from being in there. I don't know how it got there. I've decided it was you, sending a bit of the light back before the dark properly sets in.
Lambing starts in February. Ring me when you get the chance, or don't, and I'll still know you're alive from the post.
Love, Ruth
