A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mother Hanna kept a jar of metal on the windowsill of the dance hall at Cold Harbour, and every Saturday she sold it by the spoonful to whoever had the coin and the nerve. Gold for the vain, silver for the widowed, black for those who had already decided what they were. Nobody asked her where it came from. The man who came in on the last Saturday of October wanted something else entirely. He stood by the door with his hat in both hands and said he needed the feathers, three of them, one for each of the seasons his brother had been gone.

She told him feathers were easy enough to hold but hard to keep. He said he knew. She took her small brush and painted the first one gold along the inside of his wrist, then the second silver, then the third black, and as each dried it lifted off the skin like a leaf off a pond. The band of diamonds went round above it, and the hexagon bracelet, and a chain that clinked when he moved his hand. The fiddler stopped to watch. Nobody in the hall had seen a thing made so fine.

When he went out into the rain the music started again, a little quicker than before. Mother Hanna wiped her brush on her apron and counted the coins, and the last of them was warm, as if it had been held a long time in someone's pocket. She put it in the jar with the others and left the lid off, because that was how you knew the next one would come.
