The gold sheets are curling at the corners by the time you reach the trestle table under the Bramley trees, the card already sticky where wasps have found the windfalls. Mrs Okonedo, who runs the parish stall every August, has pinned a handwritten sign to a low branch: Gold for the Restless, 50p. You take a sheet anyway. The lotus is pale in the afternoon light, and the enso looks like a brushstroke someone meant to finish before the bell rang.

Your brother is still up the ladder in the far row, calling down that the Discovery trees are ready and nobody is listening. You peel the backing from the om symbol and press it onto the wooden lid of the cash tin, rubbing with a damp thumb the way the card instructed. The foil lifts clean. For a minute the mark holds the sun like a coin at the bottom of a well, and the clatter of the fair thins into the drone of bees working the clover.

Mrs Okonedo comes back with a tray of cider cups and finds you crouched over the tin. She doesn't scold. She says the old woman who first brought the sheets to the orchard used to claim gold only stays where somebody has stopped to look at it. Then she tells you the price is a suggestion, and the apples will rot if the children don't come and fetch them.

You tear the enso from the sheet along its faint perforation and fold it into your pocket. Behind you, a windfall drops into the long grass with a soft sound, like someone clearing their throat before speaking, and the lotus stays on the cash tin in the sun, the only thing in the orchard that is not moving.
