Golden ratio spiral on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a spiral made of quarter-circle arcs drawn inside a set of nested rectangles, with the arcs shrinking towards a small square at the centre. The linework is a single consistent black outline with no shading, and it stands out crisply against the pale skin. The black and white photograph shows the forearm against a grey sleeve and a plain background, keeping the design as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gardener's widow had planted sunflowers along the south wall because her husband had, and because the bees liked them. By the third August the heads were as broad as dinner plates, and she sat on the step with a knife and a bowl, meaning to save the seed for spring.

Her neighbour Tomasz came over the wall to ask about the blight in his beans. He stood and watched her pick out the seeds. She counted them into the bowl a few at a time, and each row turned round on itself like a tap being turned.

"They don't go straight," he said.

"No. They go round, each turn a little smaller than the last, and every turn the same shape as the one before." She pressed a seed into the soil with her thumb to show him. "My husband drew it on the back of a seed packet. He said if you cut a rectangle into squares until nothing was left over, and drew a curve through each square, the curve would lead you into the middle every time."

Tomasz looked at the wall, the sunflowers, the pale brick. "And what is at the middle?"

"Nothing you can plant," she said. She tipped the bowl into his hands and sent him home with the seed wrapped in a dock leaf, and he sowed it that spring in a spiral, one turn closer each time, and his beans came up better than they ever had.
