Golden ratio spiral on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline of a golden ratio spiral drawn inside a set of nested rectangles, with the curve sweeping through each smaller square. The lines are uniform and crisp, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The tattoo sits centrally on the forearm against a blurred cream background and a red and black checked sleeve.

Mr Pilling pushed a tray of dough across the bench at ten to three and told me to stop watching the clock on the wall. The ovens were ticking as they heated, and the whole shop smelled of scorched sugar and wet stone. He handed me the bench scraper and a sheet of dough the size of a tea towel. 'Cut me a rectangle,' he said. 'Long side against the short, the way a door meets its frame.'

I cut it badly the first time, then again. He watched with flour up to his elbows and tapped the board. 'Now take the square off the end. What's left is the same shape, only smaller.' I did. He made me repeat it until the dough looked like boxes folded inside boxes. Then he drew a curve with his knuckle through each square, a quarter circle sweeping from corner to corner, and the spiral was there in the flour as if it had always been waiting under the dough.
'Every loaf in this shop is shaped to that,' he said. 'Nobody needs to know it. The customers just think the crust tastes better.' I asked why the curve kept shrinking and he laughed, a low sound in the cold air. 'Because it never quite finishes. Each square you cut leaves a shape that wants cutting again.'
The last loaf went in at ten past five, when the car park outside had turned the grey of old pewter. I copied the spiral onto the back of an order slip and pinned it above the bench. He never said whether he believed in the number or only in the bread. He just kept cutting the squares, and so did I.
