Golden ratio spiral on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black fine line tattoo shows a golden ratio spiral drawn inside a set of nested rectangles and quarter arcs. The linework is even and uniform in weight, with no shading. The design runs diagonally across the forearm of a light-skinned arm, which rests on a blue denim sleeve against a pale background.

The snow had buried the lower step of the Hollin Inn by the second night, and Mary Auld was still measuring the cellar door with a knotted cord when the carter came stamping in to ask whether the rooms were warm. She told him they were warm enough and went back to her sums, which had nothing to do with rooms.

Her grandmother had left her a square of oak and a rule about it. Cut a square, the old woman said, then cut a rectangle beside it whose long side is the square's long side times the measure that never ends, and cut again, each piece turning the corner the way the last one turned. Where the cuts run out, you will find the curl of the thing itself, and that curl is what a door wants, a loaf wants, a stair wants, to be right in the hand.
Through the long white week the guests came down to the kitchen one by one because the fire was there. A drover, a widow with a cough, two clerks who argued about the price of wool. Mary cut the bread in the old pattern, and the drover said it tasted as though someone had been kind to it. The clerks stopped arguing long enough to eat.
On the seventh morning the thaw came in with a drip from the eaves. Mary carried the oak square out to the yard, drew the nested shapes in charcoal, and found the curl had run straight to the hinge of the cellar door. She pushed. It swung true for the first time in forty years, and beyond it lay the apple barrels, unfrozen, with her grandmother's handwriting still legible on the lid.
