Good vibes script on the side ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A handwritten script reading good vibes is tattooed on the side of a torso, just below the ribcage and beneath the hem of a grey top. The thin black linework is even and solid, with no shading or colour. The lettering sits horizontally across the centre of the frame against plain skin and fabric.

Dear Ruth,

The bus left us at the water tower at half past four, and the driver said the next one would come when it came. So I'm sitting on my rucksack writing this on the back of the timetable, which is the only paper I have. The road runs dead straight in both directions, shimmering like someone has spilt a jar of milk on it, and nothing has passed in forty minutes except a goat and a man on a bicycle who raised two fingers at me as if we were old friends.
Dad's old fountain pen is in my bag, the one with the cracked green cap. I found it in the drawer after the funeral and I have been using it for everything, shopping lists, the electricity bill, a card to Mrs Okafor. Yesterday I wrote the words good vibes across the back of my hand just to see whether the ink would hold in the heat. It did, though the letters ran a little where I sweated.
I know you think I should have waited for the spring coach. Maybe you're right. But a woman in the café in the last town told me that the road ends at a lake that is not really a lake, only salt and sky, and that people go there to stand still and listen. I thought I would like to hear something for once that wasn't Dad's cough through the wall.
The bus is here. It is blue and smells of diesel, and the driver has finally got out to smoke. I'll post this from the next town, if there is one. If you get it, know that I'm not lost. I'm just a long way from the handwriting on the fridge, and I'm learning how to make my own.
