Good vibes script on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small black script tattoo reading good vibes sits on the side of a torso, below the ribs and above the hip. The thin, hand-lettered linework is uniform, with the letters joined in a loose cursive flow. The photograph is taken close up against a plain grey top and pale skin, so the lettering stands out clearly.

Mrs Okonedo had a brush clamped between her teeth when the van pulled up outside the bakery, and Tom knew from the way she spat it into her palm that the morning would not go to plan. She had been hired to touch up the shopfront lettering, the old gold leaf gone the colour of weak tea, but somewhere between the bus stop and the kerb she had decided the sign was wrong. It had been painted in heavy capitals by a man who wanted to be read from the far side of the road. Nobody needed to read the bakery from the far side of the road. They needed to feel it when they stepped inside.

She sat on the step with a stub of pencil and a cup of tea gone cold, and drew the words in a loose slant, the way her grandmother had written on the backs of photographs. The letters ran into one another like a thread someone had forgotten to snip. Good vibes, she wrote, then crossed it out, then wrote it again smaller, because the baker's wife had asked for something cheerful and Mrs Okonedo had never once been able to write anything cheerful in capitals.

"It won't look like a shop," Tom said, leaning over her shoulder with the ladder.

"It was never supposed to look like a shop," she said. "It was supposed to look like someone had written a note and left it on the counter for you."

By noon the paint had dried to a soft black line. A girl with a sticky hand pressed her finger to the glass and followed the loop of the g all the way to the end, then the baker came out wiping flour on his apron, read it aloud to nobody in particular, and laughed.
