Good vibes script on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small black script tattoo reads good vibes across the side of the torso, just below the ribcage. The linework is thin and even, with the letters slanting gently to the right. The tattoo is the only colour in the frame, set against soft grey fabric and smooth skin.

The council letter arrived on a Tuesday, which Morag Dunne considered suspicious. It said the north tower of Kinloch Keep was unsafe and would be fenced off by Friday, and it asked her, very politely, to remove the hand-painted board she had nailed to the gatepost. The board read good vibes in her own slanting capitals, because a visitor from Leeds had once told her the castle had bad ones.

She ignored the letter and climbed the spiral stair with a flask of tea and a tin of shortbread, as she did every morning. Pigeons had moved into the arrow slits. Someone had carved initials into the window seat in 1911, and someone else had scratched a crude sun beside them. She sat where the floor was still sound and talked to the wall about the weather, the price of diesel and her sister's divorce, because a ruin makes a poor listener but a good witness.
On Thursday a surveyor in a yellow helmet came up with a clipboard and a measuring wheel. He did not look at the stonework. He looked at her, then at the board propped on the step, and asked whether she meant it. She said she meant it most days. He wrote something down, not in the logbook, and went away without saying what.
On Friday the north tower came down in the night with a noise like a dropped piano. By morning the fence was up around a heap of red sandstone. Morag walked the cordon with a bacon roll in one hand. The board had survived, face up in the grass, its paint blistered but legible. She propped it against the gate again, and below it, in the dust, she scratched a smaller line with a stick: still here.
