The skipper of the Mercy Ann never read the slate above the galley hatch, which is why Dot Harrow kept writing on it. Every morning before the lock at Hythe she chalked something in her looping hand: the tide times, the price of paraffin, a line from a hymn her mother sang off-key. Ray Cobb grunted at it the way he grunted at the kettle, and the crew of two took their tea up on deck.

The March the fog came down thick on the Medway, the barge ground her keel into the mud below Upnor and sat there for six hours while the water drained out from under her. Ray stood at the tiller with his jaw locked. Dot, wet to the elbows, hauled warps and said nothing, because speaking made him worse. When the tide finally lifted them she went below, cold to the bone, and found the slate wiped clean.

She stood looking at it longer than she meant to. Then she took the chalk and wrote, small, the thing her grandfather used to say whenever the kettle boiled over: good vibes, underlined twice. In the morning the galley floor had a fresh smear of mud across it, and beneath her words ran a second line in heavy capitals that leaned like a barge in a crosswind: GOOD VIBES DOT, ALSO SORRY. Nobody wiped it off.
