Hebrew lettering on the inner wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a short line of Hebrew script tattooed across the inner wrist of pale skin. The letters are in solid black ink with clean, even linework and a simple typeface. The plain skin background and tight framing keep the focus on the lettering.

The bus has been ticking in the heat for forty minutes, and the driver has stopped apologising. You sit by the window with your rucksack on your knees and watch the road shimmer where it bends away towards Mitzpe Ramon, a grey ribbon with nothing on either side but stones the colour of old bread. Somebody behind you is reading the price of a fridge aloud into a phone. A goat wanders out from nowhere and stands in the middle of the lane as if it has an appointment.

Your grandmother used to say the words whenever the bread burned or the gas bottle ran empty or a brown envelope arrived from the council. She would tap two fingers on the kitchen table and murmur them, as though the phrase were a small stone she kept in her pocket for luck. You thought it was a dull thing for an old woman to say. Now the driver is wiping his neck with a rag and telling nobody in particular that the spare part is coming from Beersheba, and you find yourself mouthing her words under your breath.
The engine catches, the bus lurches, and the driver whoops like a boy. The goat is gone. You take the pen from your pocket, smooth a torn ticket across your knee and write the phrase the way she taught you, right to left, the letters leaning into one another like passengers at a stop. Then you fold it twice and tuck it somewhere you will find it later.
