Green banded wrist tattoos on muddy hands
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two dirty, weathered hands are pressed together around a small pale object against a blurred dark green background. Each wrist carries a pair of green banded tattoos with circular dot details, set in solid ink with simple outlines. Warm skin tones and soft focus contrast with the green ink, which is the main colour accent.

The snow came down the Carrow Gap sideways that morning, and the lamp at Hob's Cairn had gone out before I reached it. I carried a pale river stone no bigger than a hen's egg, and Marta's note was sewn into the lining of my coat. Whatever the note said had to reach the lowland post before the thaw made the bridge at Sallow impassable.

Nobody at the post had ever told me what the stone meant. They only said that a runner who carried it through the gap was owed a drink, and that the green ring of dots at the cuff marked the ones who had come back. I had four dots when I started. By the cairn I had counted five, though I had not earned the fifth yet, and I did not like to think about how that had happened.
The path dropped into a fold of rock where the wind could not reach, and there I found Tomas sitting against the wall with his knees drawn up. He had been a runner too, until the fever took the feeling from his left leg. He held out a flask without a word. I told him about the lamp. He told me the post had sent a boy up the north side two days ago, and no one had seen him since.
I left the stone with him, which was the wrong thing to do, and took the note myself. At the bottom of the gap the bridge stood, ice-hung but whole, and on the far bank a single lamp was burning in a window I knew. I walked toward it with my palm open and empty, counting the dots out loud.
