Small palm tattoos holding a compass

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised against a misty mountain valley, holding a brass compass towards the camera. On the palm are small black fine line tattoos: a letter A, a tiny crescent, and a thin arrow with a leaf-like feather at its tail. The shot is soft and warm, with the compass and tattoos sharp in the foreground and the blurred mountains behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had walked the ridge path three times that week and the compass had not once agreed with her boots. The brass face sat in her palm, its needle trembling north while the valley below swung west in cloud. Her father had left it to her with the surveying chain and a list of bench marks, and a note in his cramped hand that said only: trust the needle, doubt the map.

She reached the tarn at noon, where the wind came off the scree in long cold shoves, and found the stone cairn her father had built the spring before he died. Someone had added to it since. A flat slate had been set on top with a thin arrow scratched across it, its tail finished with a small leaf-shaped feather, and beside it a crescent cut no deeper than a fingernail. She knelt and brushed the grit from the marks. They were not his. The letter A was new, its edges still bright.

Ada turned the compass over. The needle, for once, was steady, and it pointed straight past the cairn toward a gap in the fell where mist was lifting like a curtain. She had spent a year trying to make the country fit the paper. Now she laid the brass flat on the slate, lined the arrow up with the needle, and waited until the sun broke through to show her the path beyond.

She left her own mark before she went down: a small crescent beside the arrow, and no name. Whoever came next would know the way.
