Fine line leaf and arrow on a palm

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is held palm up in front of a misty mountain valley, holding a brass compass towards the camera. Across the palm are several small black fine line tattoos: a leaf sprig near the wrist, a long thin line rising towards the fingers with an arrowhead, a small chevron and a curled spiral. The shallow focus keeps the palm sharp while the forested slopes and grey peaks blur into soft tones.

The lift in Ashdown House had died for the third time that month, so I took the stairs with Dad's compass in my coat pocket and Mrs Okafor's shopping looped over both wrists. Fourteen floors. Someone had written DON'T on the wall of the eleventh landing and someone else had crossed out the T. The brass case knocked against my hip with every step, and each time I checked it the needle swung back to north, steady as anything in that stairwell.

Mrs Okafor was waiting at her door with the chain still on. She didn't thank me. She asked whether the Co-op on Marsh Road had the good cheese or just the cheap stuff, and whether I'd seen her son's van on the way up. I told her no to both. Dad used to say a compass doesn't care what you want, it only tells you where the ground is. I left the bags on her mat and didn't mention that I'd been carrying his old habits up and down these stairs since I was nine.

On the way down, the light on the ninth floor flickered and died, and I stood in the dark with the compass open in my palm. The little needle found north in the black. I walked by its direction, one hand on the rail, counting landings the way Dad taught me on the moors above Hebden, until the grey square of the car park door showed at the bottom.

Outside, the estate was dull orange under the sodium lamps, and the hills beyond it were just a darker dark. I held the compass up to see if it still worked out here. It did. It pointed past the flats, past the motorway, towards somewhere I'd never been, and for once that felt like the right answer.
