Ada had the lamp polished to a shine, but the green monster would not leave the landing. It had hauled itself up the steps on the last spring tide, all knees and elbows, with blue tufts of sea-thrift sprouting from its head like a bad haircut. It sat there now, jaws open wide enough to swallow the gull that kept landing on its tongue, and it watched her with eyes that glowed the red of the ruby panes.

Her grandfather's logbook had a page for it. Every keeper on Gull Rock had written about the creature the same way, as if reporting the weather. Mossback, they called it. It slept in the boathouse, ate the herring crates, and never bit anybody. When the lamp failed, its eyes burned brighter, and the ledger said that was the only time to be frightened of it. Tonight the wick had cracked, and Mr Dunn's rowboat was still out past the Skerries with no light in it.

Ada climbed down with her torch. The creature did not snap at her. It lifted one claw and pointed past the rocks, where a small dark shape rolled in the swell. Then it opened its mouth and roared, a sound like a foghorn with a grudge. Ada ran to the horn, leaned her whole shoulder on the lever, and the two of them blew together until the fog thinned into a lane of silver. Mr Dunn rowed in cursing and blessing the lighthouse in equal measure.

At dawn Mossback lay curled on the boathouse slipway, snoring through its teeth. Ada opened the ledger and wrote in careful capitals: ONE NIGHT'S SERVICE, PAID IN HERRING. Then she went to fetch the fish.
