The chameleon had been sulking on the toadstool since Tuesday, and Mrs Pargeter's hens had started to take an interest. "Mr Lizzard," said Bramble the old tortoise, who had seen everything twice, "you cannot sit in a huff until the rain comes and washes you into the ditch." The chameleon folded his arms, which were not really arms but a sort of green handshake, and glared at the lane where the postman was whistling.

He had been promised a bluebell wood. Bluebells, the badger had said, were the finest colour in the county, and a fellow who could match any shade of anything could hardly be expected to live without them. But the wood had turned out to be a hedge, and the hedge a single sad patch of nettles, and now the chameleon had nothing to match but the mushroom and his own temper, which was a rather good match, if he was honest.

In the afternoon the wind dropped and a small blue flower began to open at the foot of the stalk, then another, then a whole curling tangle of them climbing up the stem like they had been invited. The chameleon watched them with one eye and then, because he was not made to do things by halves, with both. Slowly his scowl went soft at the edges.

By evening he had unfurled the tip of his tail and tied it, with great dignity, round the nearest stem. "Only until I decide where to go," he told Bramble. The tortoise said nothing, which was the wisest thing anyone in that hedgerow had said all week.
