Green gecko on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A gecko or lizard design runs down the inner forearm, with a segmented body shaded in green, yellow, teal and a touch of red. The legs and feet are drawn in black dots rather than solid lines, and the body curves gently towards the wrist. The background is plain skin with a soft, even light and a little visible body hair.

Dear Maud, the gecko has finally decided to live in the boarding house with us, and I have stopped pretending he is a nuisance. He came up through the cracked tile behind the copper in the scullery on Tuesday, all green and yellow stripes like a boiled sweet somebody had sat on, and he has been pottering about since, mostly under the bread bin. Mrs Pargeter says he is after the moths and I am to leave him be. I have left him be. He has a way of stopping mid-step with one foot lifted, as if he has forgotten what he came in for, and then he remembers and carries on with his black dotted toes.

Yesterday I found him on the back step, sunning himself where the wall meets the lintel, and I sat down beside him with my tea going cold. He turned his head to look at me and then, quite deliberately, looked at the sea over the rooftops. I took that as an invitation. We sat there till the tide went out past the groynes and the gulls were arguing over the chip papers. I did not tell him about the letter from the solicitor, and he did not ask.
I have decided to stay on through the autumn. Mrs Pargeter has offered me the attic room at the back, the one with the slanting window that catches the first light. The gecko, I suspect, has already chosen it. If you come down at Easter, bring the good wool and do not be surprised if he is waiting for you on the step. Tell your mother nothing yet. Your loving sister, Edie.
