Green owl tattoo on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon-style owl with large green eyes, a dark brown beak and shaded black wings sits on the outer thigh. Its body is filled with a pattern of small green and teal dots, with bold outlines and solid black shading on the wings. The photo is taken at an angle, with the thigh in the centre and the person's gloved hands and a black skirt at the top of the frame.

The owl came to the Palais on a Thursday, same as the gramophone man, and nobody in Hollis Street could say who had let it in. Old Mrs Ferriby swore it had been sitting on the cloakroom hatch since the Armistice, though she was always swearing things. What we knew was that it watched the dance floor with eyes as green as the bottles behind the bar, and that every time the band struck up a waltz it ruffled its feathers like a man checking his watch.

My brother Dennis took the job of sweeping up after the last waltz, and it was Dennis who found the ticket stub tucked under the owl's claw on the Saturday. Printed on it, in purple ink gone pale, was a name nobody in town had heard since the mill closed: Eileen Oakes, admit one, partner to be decided. Dennis put the stub in his waistcoat and said nothing, which for Dennis was a kind of miracle.
That night he waltzed with every woman in the hall, one after another, and on the last turn the owl blinked slow and gave a low hoot that made the whole room go still. Then the lights dipped, and when they rose again the ticket was gone from Dennis's pocket, and a woman in a black skirt was laughing at the far end of the floor, her hand up as if to say, well, go on then. Dennis went. They're still dancing, I reckon, somewhere between the last number and the first.
