Tribal sea turtle and waves on a thigh

Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A sea turtle is shown from above, with a bold tribal outline, a head extending toward the top left, and flippers spreading outward. Its shell is filled with hexagonal panels, some lightly shaded in grey, and surrounded by a dotted border, while swirling wave lines curve around the turtle on the right. The design is worked almost entirely in black ink with grey tones, and the photograph is taken from the side of a bare thigh against a plain red background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You see the turtle on the fourteenth morning out of Valparaíso, when the watch has been nothing but grey rain and Okonkwo has gone below to argue with the cook about the coffee. It surfaces off the starboard bow, a broad dark shell broken into honeycomb panels, and for a long moment it lies there as if the swell had carried it up to see who was at the rail. You lean on the wet teak and watch its head turn, slow and deliberate, before the flippers spread and it slides back under.

Teodor, the bosun, claims a turtle that shows itself to a ship is either a sign of fair weather or a sign that someone aboard is about to be fool enough to go over the side. He says it in the same tone he uses for the rope lockers, so you do not take it seriously, though you check the lifelines twice before your next watch. His grandfather sailed the Pacific runs in boats with no engines, and Teodor still keeps a folded chart in his coat, its margins full of curling lines drawn in pencil to show where the current bends round the reefs.

That night you unfold the chart under the lamp in the chart room. The pencilled waves match the wake the turtle left behind, a swirl that curled out and back on itself like hair combed by a patient hand. In the corner the old man has marked a small ring with the word Casa in faded ink, and you realise the ring sits exactly where the ship is now, nine hundred miles of empty ocean still between you and any harbour that wants you.

In the morning the sea is flat and blue. You write in the log, Sighted turtle, bearing north-east, and then you sit a while with the pen above the page. Under it you write, Heading home, and cross out home, and write it again.
