Yawning tabby cat tattoo
Realism · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic tattoo of a tabby cat sitting upright with its head tilted back and its mouth open in a wide yawn, showing teeth. Shading is smooth and detailed, with dark stripes across the body and soft grey highlights on the fur. The design is in black ink and greys only, set against a plain skin background with the cat filling the frame.

You asked in your last letter whether the cat has earned her keep yet. I can now answer with confidence: she has, though not in the way the Prior hoped.

On Tuesday the Abbot began the reading of the Rule before the whole chapter, and Brother Osric, who has the voice of a bellows, reached the passage on humility. The cat, who had been sitting upright on the lectern beside the psalter as though she were its lawful owner, tilted her head back, opened her mouth as wide as the church door, and yawned. Every tooth was on show. Three novices laughed aloud, and the Abbot paused with his finger on the verse and looked at her for a long while. I thought we were all bound for the cellar.
Instead the Abbot said, very gravely, that the cat had given us the most honest sermon on humility he had heard in thirty years, and that we might all do well to yawn at our own vanity. Then he went on reading. Brother Osric has not recovered his dignity since.
I write this from the scriptorium window, where she is now asleep on the vellum of the Gospel of John, which I am told must not be moved until Lent. Please pray for my hand, and for the cat, who has begun to answer to the name of Humility. Yours in the Lord, Brother Cuthbert
