Grey botanical leaves and stems on a lower leg

Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a lower leg with a black and grey tattoo of large leaves and thin stems, with what appears to be a lily bloom near the top. The shading is soft and tonal, with grey wash behind the leaf shapes and darker lines defining the stems. The leg rests above a cream platform stiletto boot with sheer mesh panels printed with a large floral motif, against a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lily had split the flagstones of Tobias Crane's yard the spring after the bell was stolen, and nobody in Harrowgate Lane would cut it down. Its leaves came up grey as dishwater and veined like old letters, and by midsummer the stem stood higher than the gate. Tobias called it a weed. His wife called it a warning. Their daughter Wen said nothing. She sat on the step each evening with a pair of tailor's scissors and a length of sheer mesh she had bought from the tinker, and she waited for the light to go flat.

Wen had been promised to the miller's boy, who had gone to sea in the bell-founder's boat with the silver for the new chapel. She wanted him back, or she wanted shoes fit for walking to the coast, and she could not have said which. So she pressed the lily leaves between wet linen until they turned translucent, laid them over the mesh, and stitched them down with thread the colour of ash. The bloom she shaped into a pale hide heel, tall as a finger's width above the rest, and she laced the straps tight with a bow that would not come undone.

She walked to the harbour in them through three villages and two thunderstorms. At the wall the tide came in over her ankles, and the mesh let the water through without a drop of harm, the way the lily sheds rain. The fishermen stopped asking her business. Then, from the bottom of the miller's boat, half buried in the net, she found the bell, green with salt and still whole. She lifted it by its loop and rang it once, and in Harrowgate Lane the lily bent its head toward the sound.
