Pastel cat face on forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cat's face in a circular frame, with pointed ears outlined in black, green-yellow eyes, a pale pink nose and whiskers drawn in black. The face is divided into flat blocks of pink, teal, lilac and yellow with soft shading and a slightly grainy texture. The design sits centrally on the inner forearm against a plain skin background, with a black and white patterned skirt at the right edge of the frame.

The fiddler swore the cat had been sitting on the piano lid before the hall was built, and nobody argued, because it had a way of looking at a man until he took his hat off. It was a pink-grey cat with ears like folded letters and eyes the green of unripe pears. Nobody remembered who had fed it first. Everybody agreed it never came when called.

The winter the roof leaked, the church sent Abel Tench to paint the hall for the harvest dance. He had two tins of distemper, pink and teal, and a pot of lilac he had bought cheap from a sign-writer in Ludlow. He painted the walls in blocks, the way the light fell through the high windows, and by the third night the hall looked like the inside of a boiled sweet. Tench thought he had done well. The cat watched him from the rafters with its tail wrapped round its feet.
On the night of the dance the fiddler played a reel too fast and the floor emptied into the lane. When the couples came back they found the cat had been over the walls in yellow ochre, a stripe on every panel. Tench went pale when he saw the stripes were the exact width of his own hand. Nobody asked him to paint again.
When the hall was pulled down, the builders found a cat's face in pink and teal plaster behind the stage, its green eyes still bright. They left it standing, because none of them wanted to be the first to look away.
