Cartoon cat with pizza in a heart frame

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A grey cartoon cat with a striped head and black outlines holds a slice of pepperoni pizza in front of its face. It sits inside a teal scalloped heart frame with pink dots, set against a purple background speckled with dots. The bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour with soft shading give it a clean, graphic finish.

He arrived at half eleven, when the lunch queue was at its longest, trotting along the top of the fishmonger's crates as if he owned the lot. Nobody claims him. The woman from the bakery calls him Sergeant, the boys on the veg stall call him Biscuit, and I have decided he is called Dennis. He sat square in front of my counter and stared at the margherita like a magistrate reading out a sentence.

I gave him a slice of pepperoni, partly out of pity and partly because the rain had soaked every cardboard box I owned and I could not face another tray of ruined dough. He carried it off with both paws and the whole careful dignity of a waiter crossing a crowded floor, and he ate it under the bin at the corner where it was dry. Then, bold as anything, he came back for a second.

I told him no. He ignored me completely. Mr Okafor says a cat that good at getting what it wants should be running the council, and I am beginning to suspect he is right, and that Dennis has already been to see him about a licence.
