Cartoon cat tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black linework tattoo of a round, simple cartoon cat sits on the inner forearm. The outline is thin and even, with a few short dark marks suggesting stripes on the cat's side and a tail curling at the base. A real tabby cat rests its paw and face in the frame, and the soft neutral background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

At ten past two the last number 56 had gone from Briggate, and the only thing left on the wet pavement was a round grey cat sitting dead centre, as if it had paid for the spot. You had a tray of unsold chelsea buns under one arm and the shop keys between your teeth, and the cat watched the buns the way a magistrate watches a defendant.

"Not a chance," you told it. It followed you anyway, trotting in that flat-footed way, its tail curled up at the base like a question mark, all the way down the lane to the back door of the bakery. It sat on the step, unblinking, while you fumbled with the lock.

Inside, the ovens ticked as they cooled. You broke a bun in half and set it on the step. The cat ate with the tidy outrage of a pensioner at a wedding buffet, then paused to inspect the faint stripes along its own flank, and gave you a look that said the arrangement was now permanent. Your manager would have had something to say about that.

By dawn you had named it Biscuit, which was your first mistake. On Monday there were two of them, on Friday a third, and by the weekend the lot had formed a queue at the shutter as if they kept a rota. You still don't know whose they are. The sign you taped to the back door says Buns for the cats, ask inside, and the baker's boy has started charging a penny for the privilege.
