Grey cat with donut in a pink sprinkled heart

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A grey cat sits inside a large pink heart dotted with orange, purple and blue sprinkles, and holds a blue iced donut with sprinkles in front of its face. The word "mmm..." appears beneath the cat, and a black scalloped lace outline frames the heart. Bold black linework is combined with flat, lightly shaded colour, with a small green leaf visible at the bottom edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ottoline Pike kept the bakery on Calder Street for thirty-one years, and for most of them the grey cat slept on her flour sacks as if he paid rent. Nobody had named him. He answered to "oi" and to the bell over the door, and he never once came when called, only when the back door opened and the smell of frying dough drifted out into the lane.

The trouble started on a wet Tuesday in March, when the new lad left a tray of blue iced rings cooling on the sill. The cat came down from the shelf, considered the tray with the patience of a magistrate, and took one. He carried it to the middle of the shop floor, sat down with it held up in front of his face, and said, quite clearly, "Mmm." Ottoline swore she heard it over the kettle.

After that he came every morning. He took a ring, then two, then a whole row, and each time he sat in the doorway with his tail wrapped round his feet and ate with great ceremony while the sprinkles fell onto the lino like a little coloured hail. The lad wanted to put him out. Ottoline only shook her head and wrapped one ring in waxed paper each morning and set it on the step.

On the last day of the month a chill came in off the river and the cat did not appear. Ottoline found him curled behind the sack of icing sugar, a donut pushed up against his nose, looking mildly embarrassed. She left him there with the door propped open and a fresh tray warming in the window, and by lunchtime the pair of them were sharing the bench out front, not saying a word, both pretending the sprinkles were nobody's business.
