Teddy bear with heart balloon on forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon teddy bear with a small pink mouth floats beneath a large red heart balloon, holding its string. The bear sits on a grey, scalloped patch with dark outlines and soft shading. The bold red, brown and grey colours stand out against the skin, and the design is centred on the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At ten to six the lost property office at Cressley Road smelled of wet umbrellas, and Maureen Tolley had already logged nineteen items when the bear arrived. It came over the counter in a carrier bag from the 17:42 to Ashby, its string still tied to a red foil heart that bobbed against the strip light as if it had somewhere better to be.

The bag held no note. Maureen turned the bear over in her hands. Its brown fur had worn thin on one ear, and someone had stitched a pink mouth onto its face with a single careful thread. She thought of the small boy she had glimpsed on platform two, crying into his sleeve while a man in a grey coat ran the length of the train. She had not seen his face, only a fist wrapped around a string that rose and rose until it was just a red dot above the canopy.

She checked the cameras, the timetable and the lost-property ledger. Nothing matched. At quarter past six she wrote a tag in capitals, HELD FOR COLLECTION, ASK FOR BEAR, and knotted the string to the hook above the window. The heart turned slowly against the frosted glass. Outside, the last train for Ashby pulled out, and the bear sat on the sill with its one good ear tilted toward the platform, as though it were listening for someone calling its name.
