Cartoon bear with donut in a heart frame on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon bear sits at a small table holding a mug, with a pink frosted donut and a strawberry on a plate beside it. The scene sits on a pink background dotted with cream spots inside a yellow heart outline, framed by a scalloped border alternating pink and teal. The bold black outlines are filled with flat, smooth colour, and the heart is centred on the outer thigh.

Dear Tomasz,

The purple mug is still on the draining board, and I have been drinking my tea out of it all week to annoy you. Mrs Okafor says the late bus no longer stops outside the chapel, so you will walk the whole way from the depot in this drizzle, and I will not feel sorry for you.

I came by the bakery at half eleven, when the shutters were half down and the strip lights buzzed over the counter. Halima had put aside the last pink frosted ring for you, with a single strawberry balanced on top like a cherry on a cake that thinks it is grand. She wrapped it in greaseproof and wrote your name on the paper in biro, then crossed it out and wrote 'Bear' underneath, because you once told her that is what your sister called you when you were small and sulking.

I sat at the little table by the window with the donut on a plate and waited for you to come past in your yellow reflective jacket. A lorry went by, then a taxi, then a fox with a crisp packet, and I thought about the night you dropped the radio into the canal. You never did say sorry properly. So this is me saying I kept the donut warm for you, the tea has gone cold, I am cross, and I love you.

Come home by the canal path. The strawberry will not keep.
