Grey elephant tattoo on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet rest together on a white polka dot sheet. A small tattoo of overlapping elephant heads and trunks sits on the outer side of the right foot, drawn in fine black linework with soft grey shading. The design is black and grey, and the close framing keeps the feet centred with the tattoo on the right.

By the third bend the path had stopped being a path and become a shelf of grey ice no wider than a cart, and the beasts knew it before any of us did. Old Sabra stood at the edge with her ears folded flat and would not take a step. At Saguntum they had told me she was the only one who had carried a man across the Rhone without a rope. I believed it until I saw her shaking.

Bostar came down the line shouting in Punic, then in soldiers' Latin, then simply pushing. It was the youngest bull who solved it. He reached forward and curled his trunk around the tail of the beast ahead, and the next did the same, until the column was one long grey rope knotted nose to tail. Sabra felt the chain tighten behind her, gave a groan I felt in my own ribs, and walked.
We crossed in the blue hour before dark, the snow swallowing every sound but breath and the creak of harness. I kept my palm flat on her flank and counted her steps, because counting was the only thing my hands could do. Near the top a gust tore Bostar's cloak off his shoulders and over the drop. Nobody laughed, but Sabra rumbled low in her chest, and we went on.
On the far side the column came apart as each animal let go of the one before, as if setting down a weight it had always known how to carry. Sabra found a patch of dry grass and ate it slowly, trunk loose and unhurried. I sat beside her with my boots full of snow and understood that I had been carried too.
