Small cat outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot is shown in profile, with a small black line drawing of a cat with pointed ears, dot eyes and whiskers on the outer ankle near the heel. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoo is in black ink only. The cat sits small in the lower right of the frame against a plain, light background.

Stop wriggling, the lamp won't tell you the rest any faster. Now. The guard at the Vrana bridge had a ledger as thick as a loaf, and he turned every page before he looked up at Anka Lessing, who had a grey cat tucked inside her coat.

"Name of the animal," he said, without lifting his pen. Anka said it was Mouse. "Mouse is not a name," he said, "it is a complaint." Then the cat put her head out of the coat, two black dots for eyes, whiskers spread like the strings of a broken fan, and she looked at him the way a magistrate looks at a man who has come in without his trousers. The guard laughed in spite of himself, and the laugh cost him his place in the ledger.
While he hunted for it, the cat dropped onto the planks and walked out across the river, tail up, never once glancing back at the water. The guard shouted. Anka shouted. The guard's boots were already clattering after her, halfway over the bridge, when she reached the far bank and sat down neatly on the stones to wait, as if she had been expected there for a hundred years.
When the guard finally came back, red in the face, he found Anka's name written in his own careful hand, and beside it a small ink mark like a cat's head with a crooked ear. He never explained it, and he never asked for a name again. So you see, my lamb, the cats of Vrana have never needed papers, and I have never needed to ask for one either.
