Grey feather tattoo at the nape
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind with her hair pinned up and one hand raised to it. A small feather is tattooed on the skin at the base of her neck, drawn with dark grey linework and soft shading along the vane. The white knit jumper and muted background keep the focus on the tattoo.

You spend the whole of Lauds unable to begin the second gathering of the psalter. The letters come out heavy. Each time you lift your pen you glance at the feather and it seems to look back, patient, as if it knows the difference between a copy and a thing that was once alive. Prior Gerard passes behind you, sees the blot spreading beneath your hand, and says nothing, which is worse than a rebuke.
By the bell for Terce you have stopped pretending. You carry the feather out to the cloister garth, where the wind comes in off the marsh, and you hold it against the grey sky to see its outline. Then you open your hand. It drops slowly, turning once, and settles in the herb bed beside the well. You find you can write again, though the letters are plainer now, and the Prior never asks after the page.
