Traditional style tattoo of a grim reaper holding a black umbrella with raindrops, with the words IT ALWAYS FUCKING RAINS above, on a person's calf.

Grim reaper with umbrella on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A traditional style grim reaper holds a black and orange umbrella above a skeletal figure with a red hood lining, and raindrops fall from the umbrella's edge. The words IT ALWAYS FUCKING RAINS sit in bold black capitals in an arc above the figure. Bold black outlines and flat red, orange and black fills give the piece a classic American traditional look, and the design is centred on the calf with a plain pavement and dark background behind.

Dear Morag,

The ferry didn't run again today, so the post sat in Captain Dunn's shed while the rain came in sideways off the Minch as if it had a grudge. That makes fourteen days now. I stopped keeping the tally on the wall because the pencil marks were running into each other, and Mrs Ferrier said that was the damp getting into the plaster, which I took to mean I should stop being so precise about things.

You'll laugh, but the hooded fellow came up the shingle last night. Tall, bones showing through his coat, carrying a black umbrella like a walking stick. I thought it was Angus from the bothy dressed up for a joke until he tipped the brim and the lamplight went straight through his ribs. He wanted Old Iain, who has been dying since Hogmanay and plainly means to outlast the weather out of spite.

I didn't let him in. I offered him a dram instead, which he declined, and a seat in the porch, which he also declined, so we stood there discussing the weather like two strangers waiting for the same bus. He said the rain was the worst job he'd ever had. I said I could believe it. He said he'd come back when the sky cleared, and I told him it wouldn't, not on this island, and he very nearly smiled.

Write soon, and tell Ewan to bring a proper coat when he visits. I wouldn't trust that thin thing of his to keep off the damp, let alone the reaper.

Love, Kirsty
