Black and grey outline tattoo of a banner reading GRRRL on a forearm, with part of another tattoo visible above it.

GRRRL banner tattoo on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A simple black outline banner with the word GRRRL in capitals sits across the forearm, near the elbow. The linework is thin and slightly uneven, with no shading, and the ink is black and grey. The photo is a close, slightly low-light selfie-style shot with the arm taking up most of the frame, and a grey top and bed linen in the background.

Dear Marguerite,

You will be pleased to hear the Ministry of Tea has finally agreed to let the kettle stay in the eastern wing, provided it is never again used to boil anything the Queen might have to taste. I have pinned the decree above the pantry door so the gulls cannot read it and go marching off with the sugar. Mr Pennick says he is too old for shouting, so it falls to me, and I have been practising in the orchard where the apples can't argue back.

The reason I write is the banner. Your brother came up the hill yesterday with his sleeves rolled and a scrap of ribbon from the Harvest Fair stuffed in his pocket, and he made me sit still while the lamplighter's boy drew the letters on my arm with a burnt stick. It took the whole afternoon. The words wobbled and one of the R's leaned like a drunk on a fence post. Everyone in the village has asked what it says, and I have said it says exactly what it sounds like, because that is the only honest answer I have.

The Chancellor came to the orchard gate this morning to read it, squinting over his spectacles, and went very pale. I did not bite him. I only lifted my chin and let the wind move the ribbon. He turned around and walked back to the palace without a word, which is more than he has managed in eleven years of council.

Come home in the spring. Bring the good scissors. I have a great deal to cut down to size.

Yours, with teeth, Helen
