Pinky promise hands on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a thin black outline tattoo of two hands hooked together by their little fingers, on the outer upper arm. The linework is single weight and uncoloured, with no shading visible. A grey marl t-shirt and layered necklaces, one with a green stone pendant, fill the rest of the frame, and the face is not shown.

Sit closer, and give me your hand, the little finger only, the way the girls did over the proving trough. Mind the flour. The bakery on Harrow Lane was dark at four in the morning, and it was dark the morning Nell Pardoe and Winifred Tull stood either side of the great slab of dough and quarrelled about currants.

Winifred had been offered a place at the biscuit works in Leeds. Good wages, a room with a window, and no more getting up before the owls. Nell said she was a fool to go. Winifred said Nell was a fool to stay in a place that smelled of yesterday's loaves. Neither would look up. The starter sat in its brown crock between them, bubbling away as if it had an opinion of its own.

So Nell reached across, hooked her little finger around Winifred's, and said, 'Then you'll come back for the starter at Easter, or I'll feed it to the pigeons.' Winifred hooked back. 'Swear it on the sourdough.' They swore it, and the promise held the way flour holds water, roughly and for good.

Easter came and went. The Leeds letters stopped, and the crock grew grey and sulky. Nell kept feeding it every morning, lighting the ovens herself in the black hour before the carts came. On the third Saturday in May the back door bolt slid, and there was Winifred, coat over her arm, flour on her cuffs though she had not baked since Leeds. Neither of them said a word about Easter. They simply linked their little fingers through the gap in the shutter, and the first loaves came out golden.
