Accordion and treble clef on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a red and white accordion with its keys and bellows shaded in soft grey tones, set against a large black treble clef and smaller musical notes. Dark flame-like swirls sit behind the instrument and fade into the skin at the edges. Red ink dominates the accordion, with black and grey used for the clef, shadows and background.

Dear Piotr,

The red accordion is still in my hallway, propped against the coat rack where you left it the night the removal van came. I have not played it. I pressed the bellows once, to hear whether the old wheeze still lived in it, and it sighed the way your chest used to when you climbed the stairs with the shopping. The council letter says Hollis Court comes down in March, so I suppose we are all being moved along like loose change.

You will laugh, but the stairwell has been quieter since Tuesday. Mrs Adeyemi on twelve says the building hums less without your scales coming up through the vents at six. Every evening a child on the ground floor tries to pick out the tune from your Sunday polkas, and gets it wrong in the same place you always did, the high bit before the drop. I never told you that I liked the mistake.

I carried the instrument down to the bins this morning, wrapped in your moth-eaten blanket, and I could not leave it there. I carried it back up fourteen floors instead. It is heavier than it looks, and it breathes when I set it down on the mat.

Come for tea before the van arrives. Bring the bass notes, if you still have them in you. I will keep the kettle warm and the door on the latch.
